Rio di Cannaregio
This channel lies between the Guglie Bridge and the Three Arches Bridge, toward the northern lagoon.
It allows boats to pass from the northern lagoon to the Grand Canal. It is one of the main thoroughfares of the entire city because both public transportation and transport boats for supplies pass through it. Furthermore, it is one of the liveliest places in Venetian life, with its schools and the entrance to the Jewish ghetto.
Here one can see well the peculiarity of Venetian life: the intersection of in Rio di Cannaregio and Strada Nova is with an intersection of two main streets of a large city. Instead of a traffic light is the Guglie Bridge.
In Venice there is a perfect separation between the commercial traffic, which takes place by boat in the canals, and the civil traffic, which takes place on foot in Campi and Calli.
Early in the morning, there is considerable commercial traffic. Transport boats load and unload goods that serve the life of the city. A break in loading takes place. The goods pass from the boats to particular carts, with which the carriers will walk to their destinations. It is hard to realize how life works in a city without vans unless you see it for yourself.
We have two houses that overlook the Rio of Cannaregio and offer a remarkable panoramic view from above.
